At the Crossroads Farm & Craft Market a couple years ago, my mom met a woman who raised alpacas. She had given my mom her card with an invitation to come see her alpaca farm sometime. My mom came across the card this summer and asked if I'd like to go. We found the farm pretty easily and the woman from the market was as gracious as ever when we arrived. She was in the process of preparing CSA boxes with produce from her farm, but stopped everything to take us down to the pasture where the alpacas were grazing.

An alpaca had just been born yesterday, she told us. She found him sitting timidly in the grass and feared he had been trampled by the others. But as soon as she scooped him up and set him upright, we saw he was fine. He had already gained a pound overnight, she explained, so he was up to 18.5 pounds. The woman let us take turns holding him, and his mother approached us while he was in our arms. I feared I was about to get bitten, but all the mother did was make kissing noises and touch noses with her baby.
The farm has over three dozen alpacas, which the woman breeds and sells their fleece. She also sells yarn and other products made from their fleece right there at her farm.

| I also loved her dog -- but don't want to know where this bone came from! |
