Our first destination on our trip to Sicily was Ciminna, my mother-in-law's town. In Ciminna, there were two alarm clocks which alternated in waking me up each morning: the roosters on a nearby farm or the megaphone on a food truck. Trucks loaded with produce, dry goods, meat, or fish circulate throughout the towns almost daily, using horns and megaphones to announce their arrival and what they were offering. On this particular day, we had a visit from la pescheria, or, fishmonger.
Unlike the produce and dry goods trucks, la pescheria is a refrigerated truck. This salesman explained that he picks up fish from the market in Palermo in the early morning, after the fishermen have been out all night catching them. He then drives around to all the smaller towns to sell it from his refrigerated truck.
His truck is equipped with a scale, cutting board, and cash register.
Because of its proximity to Palermo and the sea, we enjoyed lots of seafood during our stay. My husband's cousin prepared for us the following items:
- gamberi - shrimp
- pesce spada - swordfish
- frutta di mare - mixed shellfish, including one of my favorites: cozze - mussels
- vongole - clams
- sarde - sardines
- salmone - salmon
- and the fish pictured above, which I can't remember the name of.
