At the very beginning of our wedding planning, one of the first things my husband and I discussed was the wedding party, or lack thereof. We chose to have one witness each: my "man of honor" was my only sibling, my brother, and my husband's "best man" was his cousin, who also happens to be his godfather.

While not having a traditional wedding party was what we wanted, we did get a lot of confused looks when people asked questions like, "How many bridesmaids are you having?" "What do your bridesmaid dresses look like?" "How many people are in the wedding party?" And heard my replies of "Zero." "Black suit." and "Four, including us." We found it to be simpler and more meaningful this way. Two of my oldest friends did readings during the ceremony so I still felt like they were able to be a part of it. My friends, for the most part, were supportive of my decision and somewhat relieved not to have to buy another bridesmaid dress. The long and short of it is you really only get one wedding day, and it has to be for you and your future spouse. Going the untraditional route is difficult at times but sticking with what you truly want will bring the most happiness in the end.
