While we were in DC, my aunt took us on an excursion to the Blue Ridge Mountains. (The picture above of the Masonic Temple in Alexandria was taken while we were en route to meet her.) We had to fuel up for our afternoon of hiking so she took us to Red Truck Bakery in the quaint town of Warrenton, VA. We grabbed sandwiches from their fridge and sat down at the giant communal table to feast. We conquered the menu by dividing up our three different sandwiches and sharing. Veggie "beetloaf," tuna salad, and chicken salad on their homemade bread, followed up by Ranger cookies. We met a sweet elderly lady who told us she comes here everyday for her coffee and pastry. She just happened to have photos to show us of her husband, who she had dated early in life, remet as a widow, and then married. "He's my second husband and I'm his fourth wife," she said with a smile.
From there, we drove to Shenandoah National Park. There was snow on the ground from the recent storm, and it turned out that some of the roads were closed. We couldn't access Skyline Drive, which was our original plan. So it turned out we wouldn't be hiking off our Ranger cookies after all. We did find an alternate activity which was quite the opposite of being on top of the mountains...
